SHE Legal Compliance During Rigging Operations | Sasol Warehouses
 
As a valued business partners the importance of ensuring safety, health, and environmental (SHE) legal compliance during rigging operations at all Sasol warehouses, is of pivotal importance. Rigging activities are an integral part of our lifting operations and it is crucial that the relevant regulations and guidelines to maintain a safe working environment, are adhered to.
 
Approved by the Chief Inspector of the Department of Labour, as a Lifting Machine Entity (under regulation 18(5) of the Driven Machinery Regulations (DMR),  since 14 October 2014) and the Occupational Safety and Health Act 85 of 1993 (OSHA), regulations on rigging and lifting of equipment for our operations, have been fully approved. This approval grants us the authority to perform lifting operations required by our business. However, it is essential that all basic rigging operations should be conducted under supervision during training, and the load capacity for such rigging must not exceed 2,000 kg. Any lifting operations more than (2) two tons, must be conducted by a qualified and competent rigger.
 
Regrettably, Inbound Logistics does not employ riggers and relies upon the Regional Operations (ROAS) lifting hub for this requirement. To ensure compliance with the provisions of the DMR, and to ensure the availability of a qualified rigger,  all service providers are requested to notify Sasol a minimum of (48 ) forty-eight hours in advance if the load to be delivered to a Sasol warehouse, exceeds the (2) two-ton limit.  This advanced notice ensures we can collaborate with the ROAS lifting hub to provide a rigger and where applicable, additional mobile cranes for offloading.
 
In the event imported / container deliveries cannot be planned, please ensure the vehicle arrives at the Sasol site by 07:00am. The early arrival enables collaboration with the rigging department to plan and facilitate a smooth offloading process. Unfortunately, unscheduled deliveries may result in ‘standing time’ due to the unavailability of a pre-arranged riggers or the required equipment.

The following items (>2 ton) are included in this requirement:
  • ISO containers (fig. 1)
  • 6/12-meter freight containers (fig. 2)
  • Motors, gearboxes, rotors, etc., weighing >2 tons (fig.3)
  • All items that cannot be offloaded by a forklift i.e., not palletized and requires specialised rigging with an overhead/mobile crane for offloading
